There had been an intention to look at refreshing the appearance of the forum to go with our new website. Unfortunately due to a glitch this has happened a bit faster than expected. Our old appearance for the forum is no longer available as an option with our hosting system.

I understand it will take a bit of time to get used to. The moderators are adjusting too, and we will update the userguide as soon as possible.

Thanks Food_Support.  Change is never easy, but is constant in our lives...I actually find this new set up more 'modern' and also perhaps more welcoming.

Uuuuuh, I really hate these changes, I was with windows XP until they stopped support so you will know what I mean. But I will try to get used to it...😉
What I find strange is that the new screen seems to be in two languages and offers some german translation in parts which are not always correct and not that helpful, can I change that and have it all English again (never thought I would ever ask something like that...)?

Another question: how can I skip to the last post on a thread directly from start side of ATDT? If I click on the title of the thread I start at page 1 and need to seek for the last page...there was a button "last post", is it still there?

Am I being stupid?  I can’t find my way around this new-look forum at all.  It’s actually making me feel dizzy.  And now I find I can’t even preview my post before I post it.

Hi Orca,

If you want to change a post there is the option to edit it. I'm not sure there is a preview as such but if anyone knows differently, please correct me! You can preview it as you are writing it and then after you post you will see a triangle on the top right of the post. If you pull it down you will see the pencil tool and you can edit it if you would like to make any changes. So you could preview by posting and then make any changes you might want to by editing.

Hope this helps

Kali

I just tried it on Ellesmum's  long thread about Nearly Broken.  It took me to midway down the second-to-last page.  I know you guys all do great work and and I recognize you have said the old format is not an option going forward.  That said, I miss the old format and do not see myself adjusting to this new format.  Yes, change is not always easy or fun and I know it may just be a learning curve, but what I miss about the old one is seemingly gone as opposed to I haven't found it.  So, thanks for a great forum, but I don't think I'm just being an unyielding dinosaur to say I don't love this new look (which is not just a new look -- the functionality is different ).  Anyway, click on the name of long thread to see if it takes you to the last post ...

FWIW, on my Mac (Safari) it does not seem to go to the last post.  Just tried on two different long threads and it took me to the first post.  However, on my iPhone, it does take me to the most recent post.  Not sure if that is on my end or something you need to know to help others navigate.  I'll mess with it more tomorrow to be sure it is in fact that pattern of computer versus phone.

Some helpful things to note with the new format, applies to PC and iphone, working on other formats.

1. On the left of the list of posts are dark bars. These are the equivalent of stars on the old forum as unread posts, so easy to tell if there are new threads on a post.
2. When you open a thread by clicking on the title it takes you to the page where you last read the thread. You will then note that the posts have a small orange dot in the top left corner. There are your unread responses.
3. The colored blocks with avatars on the right on PC are used to tell you who posted last, who started the thread etc. Hover a mouse over the top and it will then tell you who is who. The block to the left is who started the thread, any middle block is unread posters, the block on the right is last poster.
4. The first post of the thread is visible when you open any thread. There is a title for the thread author and an option to read the full post. Underneath this is a note of what posts are on that page. When you scroll down you will see the orange dot again on the left to tell you these are the new posts.  FireShot Capture 018 - 'Around the Dinner Table' Online For_ - https__.jpg new forum 1.png

In my case clicking on the name of the thread leads me to first post first side of the thread and I need to click on the "last page" button then to get to the last post. Would be nice to have the option of going directly to the last post again.

What about that language thing? Do you guys in Netherlands or Switzerland have buttons in Dutch or Swiss there? I have some "german looking" buttons (like sign in, save and others) that are no correct German and that is quite strange. Can I please have that in English again? Other buttons are still English...

"So, thanks for a great forum, but I don't think I'm just being an unyielding dinosaur to say I don't love this new look (which is not just a new look -- the functionality is different )."
I feel the same...;( I miss the old form, too.

Another question, how can I see who is online at the moment?

I think it is quite fresh, and still had not mastered the last format, so will see how I go on this one....

Tina72,
to see who is on, go to “categories” scroll to the bottom. There will be a green button and says how many are on line. Click that and then the names, avatars and country where they are located all pops up.
Also there on that page near that button there is on the left a language button. Try that and see.
Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot, scaredmom, I could change the language.
I would think it would be great to have a green button for "online" in the threads to see who is there directly if possible.

if you hold your mouse over the persons name you can see if they are online. I know things are different and I do hope you continue to try the different options on the site. I think over time things will become more inuitive and comfortable.

Thanks for the information, FoodSupport.

If anyone is keeping score, my least favorite change is how far down I need to scroll to see how many new posts I haven't read.  The "front page" was much more compact in the previous version.

I love the quote button, though!  Brilliant!

Thanks, mods, for all your good work. xx

Torie, to edit a post there is an orange downward pointing arrow tip, click on that there there will be a pencil icon and that is how you may edit. Edited to say it is on the top right corner of the reply box.

I thought this was funny for you all but you did not see what the program offered for "German" translation...for example for "save" it said "sparen" instead of "speichern"...so better the English I am used to than bad German. 😉

Scaredmom, I changed the language with success some hours ago but now when I log in again I need to do it again because it was "German" again...does the program know from my IP that I am in Germany? How can I save the language for long term? Fake to be US born?

Tina ATDT does "know" your IP address, but I wonder if it is also picking up your main browser language which i would guess is in German, so it may be that which is causing the problem for you. One of "benefits" of the new format is touted as being able to be in different languages, all of the formats do this now. Not at all why this appearance was chosen.
If you want to convince forum site you are in the US you can use a VPN to log in - but I would guess it is more a browser issue than a IP issue.

I have been amusing myself changing the language of the forum to suit my fancy. It's clearly using Google Translate word by word, with all the failings and joys of such tools. I am assuming that we can each turn these off and on at will with that little button, and that it will remember our choices, but what you're saying Tina seems to indicate it is using your IP or your browser, not that button, to "help" you. I couldn't find anything in the settings that allowed me to choose a default language, I'm sorry to say. I'll be curious to hear of other people's experiences.

PS Facebook now offers to translate, with amusingly poor ability, the non-English posts of my friends and relatives. My favorite recent translation was a French cousin whose message about "connections between relatives" was charmingly translated as "hyphenation."
