Hello,

I'm so happy that I found this forum! It is very helpful and comforting.

We live in Germany and my daughter ist 16 and struggling with AN since nearly a year. We did not want her admitted to a clinic, and so I was looking for a therapy for her that can be done at home. After a lot of research, I found information about the FBT on the internet and I was thrilled. I knew immediately that this is the right therapy! But unfortunately, this method is not the standard therapy here in Germany, There is only 1 - one! - therapist in Germany, who does FBT. We took our d to this therapist last week (about 300 miles from our home) and fortunately she liked her and agreed to do this therapy.

So, here we are in day 5 of refeeding phase. Things aren't going badly, and so I'm cautiously optimistic. She's eating, in a very bad mood, but she's eating. I feed her about 3200 calories daily. The only problem: She has a stomach ache after more or less every meal, which we treat with hot-water bottles. I read a lot about tummy ache here in the forum and I understand, that this is quite normal during early refeeding. So I told her that this is a normal sign of the body, that he is getting used to the normal amount of food and she seems to accept this explanation.

But the day before yesterday, she showed me a red skin rash on the lower abdomen and I don't know how to judge this. Yesterday evening, the skin rash has spread a little around the genital area (not IN the genital area, but around it on the beginning of the upper thighs). Is this skin rash also an accompanying symptom of the refeeding phase? I'm a little worried and I don't know how to explain this to my d and how to help her.

I would be very happy to receive your reports and advice.

Warm greetings and thank you very much in advance

Mona

Welcome to the forum, sorry that you have had to find your way here. It sounds like your daughter has a reaction to the hot water bottle. The rash is known as Erythema ab igne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythema_ab_igne

It is not anything serious but it may get worse with continued use of the hot water bottles. The best method to reduce its spread is to wrap the hot water bottle more, or not to have the water so hot. It may in fact happen with anything warm applied to the skin.

Great job on the feeding - you are doing a fabulous job - keep up the amazing hard work.
D diagnosed restrictive AN June 2010 age 13. Initially weight restored 2012. Relapse and continuously edging towards recovery. Treatment: multiple hospitalisations and individual and family therapy.

Hi, we had also big problems with stomach ache and constipation and blowing during refeeding up to about 1 year after WR.
Here some plant meds like Gastrovegetalin helped a lot in addition to the warm water bottle. And - if she allows you to touch her - a massage.
It gets better by time but the stomach has shrunk and it is like a muscle that was not used before.

Keep feeding. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you so much to you all! I really appreciate your help, and I'm happy to tell you that with your support we found the reason for the red skin rash, it's of course caused by the hot-water bottle. I explained it to my d and she agreed to skip it for a while.

Instead of a hot water bottle you could use a Heizkissen, this can be run on lower temperature quite easy.

Keep feeding. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
