We are thinking of sending our 16 year old D to the States for Residential treatment.  Ontario only has one treatment facility with 5 beds and we are currently on a 4 month waitlist. Has anyone had experience with this and could you provide any recommendations or advice?  We are having great difficulty getting her to buy in to going..Her weight is decreasing by about 4lbs per week.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you
Nancy

What about the one week family program at UC San Diego or UC San Francisco? Maybe that helps you to get on track and then you may not need that bed any more in 4 months?

Nancytaps,
I am not sure how confident you feel in your team, but have you asked them their opinion of where to go in the States?
As you have posted in the ‘ treatment providers section’ I would encourage you to search this category and see what you feel may work best.
i think it is so individual as to whether you want a close location or not or that part does not matter and you would go anywhere?
I am sure that others will be here with their experience too on residential programs

Withsuch rapid  and significant  weight loss, I would get her into hospital. I do recall you are an RN and can do her postural vitals, but she may need admission to get her medically stable, especially  if you plan to taker her out of country soon.
all the best

Also she is so ill she is incapable of buying in. So you will need to guide her treatment mostly.

Can you accompany her for that treatment in the states? It will be needed to learn all the tricks to get her to eat before she comes home and all starts from square 1 again...so best treatment is where the parents learn how to feed them.

Can you get treatment in other parts in Canada. Being away from home might be more stressful. I’m in kelowna and I have a meeting with the team nurse this Friday. I’ll ask and let you know

HI Carla,
I was going to call "Looking Glass"  in BC on Monday to ask them about their Residential Program.  If you have any information on this centre  - positive or negative - I would  greatly appreciate your help. 🙂

Look into the Monte Nido centers. Clementine is their teen program. My d is in the Oregon one. It was a 6 week wait. There is also Kartini in Portland. Different approaches. As I understand it, Kartini will do ng tube. Clementine doesn’t, but will transfer to hospital after a certain amount of food refusal. Families are involved, in treatment but you can do video conferencing for most things. If you want more on my impressions, perhaps there is a way to direct msg?

My daughter was at kartini in Portland last fall. They helped us immensely. They will absolutely do NG if kids can't manage the amount of food they need to gain properly and they set aggressive weight gain goals (3 lb/ week). You should know, however, that it is not residential. A parent needs to be there and will be responsible for feeding child evenings and weekends ( with great support from the team). Most non-local families, including us, stay at Ronald McDonald house. Feel free to email me if you want to talk more.
