I am generally not a panicky person, but the sight of empty aisles in my local grocery store is prompting me to to plan ahead for potential self-isolation at home.  I am in a major city in Australia, and it was confronting to see a very large and busy shop completely empty of toilet paper, laundry powder, feminine products etc.   Several people were walking around with trolleys filled to the brim with muesli, rice, etc.  Not personally at risk, just thinking ahead.

Feeding AN D has had us shopping daily for a very long time, so pantry is empty- need to ensure we have enough (high energy) food in an emergency.  So far, am planning a large box of muesli bars, several bottles of oils and will bake a couple slabs of slices for the freezer.  Any other thoughts?

Panic buying in Australia has been worrying, though with limitations placed on toilet paper today for the first time it is now available on and off. First time in a week. Sugar and flour are also in short supply. If looking at stocking and refeeding from non perishables I would be thinking large quantities of oil, full fat UHT milk, dried pulses or tinned beans and lentils, frozen or tinned vegetables, rice, oats. You can add in frozen meats, bacon freezes well too. 
D diagnosed restrictive AN June 2010 age 13. Initially weight restored 2012. Relapse and continuously edging towards recovery. Treatment: multiple hospitalisations and individual and family therapy.

This too has been happening in Canada. And why toilet paper above so many other things?!
Pasta and sauces are great to have on hand. Freeze some meals. Peanut butter and other butters, crackers, boxes of cereal, dried fruit and nuts.

Pasta, rice, tinned vegetables and fruit. All you need to stay about 2 weeks in the flat without need to go out. That is what they say here.
With AN some kids do only eat THIS joghurt and THAT pasta sauce so have a stock of this when you are in this state when no flexibility is possible...

Milk powder keeps for a long time and can be added to porrige, into yoghurt, smoothies and most sauces when cooking (instead of cream), like beef stroganoff, mushroom sauce or indian curries.

Also instant mashed potatoes, tinned potatoes (for a salad), polenta and cous cous.

Frozen berries, frozen cherries for baking or smoothies.

Tinned bamboo shoots, dried noodles and frozen vegetables for stirfries.  Coconut milk tins, tomato tins and dried lentils for curries (need onions though).

Still mistified why toilet paper is priority in NZ, too...

Tinned fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines are good and higher calorie than tuna and can easily be used in pasta, sandwich fillings etc
If you get oats, muesli, sugar and butter/coconut oil and golden syrup or honey then you can make your own flapjacks and cookies
Tinned evaporated milk and condensed milk can come in handy too - you can use them to make ice cream, rice pudding etc
Cheese
Bananas freeze well and can be used for lots of things and eggs keep for ages so would definitely get some of those

@blondie, that is totally new to me that you can freeze bananas!!! Can you please tell me how you do that and what they can be used for afterwards?

@ValentinaGermania you can freeze bananas whole or sliced. Whole thaw them a bit the  chop off the top and squeeze out the flesh for things like banana cake. If less over ripe I tend to chop them into pieces then they can go in smoothies. Lastly bananas that are just right make great frozen treats - Cut in half put in a stick then dip in melted chocolate and freeze.

I just want to express my sympathy for everyone having this concern on top of ED.  Bad enough to have to fight the good fight without having to worry about food shortages.  Ugh.

I am very nervous about this situation. Quite scary to not be able to go to the store or have a food shortage with 9 kids, including an ED kid.

The scary thing here is that they will send patients home from residential if they have symptoms and need to self isolate. even if they are not eating - although I guess that makes the shopping easier.

I was thinking to post something similar a few days ago. I guess rice, tinned beans, veggies, and fruit, bread and tortillas (easily frozen), noodles, tuna, mayo, meat that you can freeze, frozen pizza, ice cream, carnation milk, tomato sauce, pesto, parmesan cheese, butter, cream, crackers, biscuits, Nutella, PB, jam, frozen waffles.
13 yo d started to eat "healthy" September 2018, she had a growth spurt a bit later, followed by tummy bug. She started restricting breakfast and school lunch in January 2019 (that we know). We succesfully refed at home.
I have found inner strenght, patience and compassion that I did not know I had.

Hi All

I’m also in the panic buying zone in Australia. I think I’ll stock up on chocolate; for eating and cooking. Blue - I am so intrigued by your casual ‘slabs of slices to freeze’. I’d love to know more: ie recipes if you have the time. They sound like magic for those of us facing possible quarantine with fussy eaters. Thanks in advance; if it’s too hard, no probs.

This is all a bit worrying but feeling like Ive won lotto tonight as I finally got a packet to toilet paper lol
I got lots of pkts of the micowave rice (my d loves this)
lots of musile bars, Tim tams (chocolate biscuits), milo, long life milk, pasta, frozen goods, ice cream!
Thank goodness we have a big freezer

I am normally not a person that panics but when you have a child in your house that is so depended to good and special food you see all that with really different eyes. I think we will get big problems in central Europe in the next weeks and the gouvernement at least here in Germany seems to be not really prepared for that.
Please stock up your food if you have an ED child in the house. Or elder people in your family. Try to make clear that all people over 60 should limit their social activities to the minimum. Do grocery for the grandparents if possible.

Thanks for all the tips! Have been busily shopping/ cooking/ baking.  I cracked and got an extra standalone freezer to store extra food. I know it’s probably overkill, but am feeling more prepared to get AN D through this, while keeping up the variety and the fear foods and progress in general (and the weight on!).

in addition to the items already suggested, have also picked up a yoghurt maker ($25 at coles/ woolies) and multiple sachets to mix with water. They last a year and taste great. Good for making a batch of bircher muesli.

ok25- re slices, i have no special recipes for these. I use the ones on the feast recipe link and search online.  These would be anything that can go in a baking tray, which i can cut up and freeze. I store these in layers to make the most of my fridge and pull them out for lunches etc.  examples would be: banana bread, muesli bars, brownies, lemon slice, caramel slice.

MKR we released a lot of tension as family watching Conan O’Brien across borders on Netflix wouldn’t have expected him to be that funny, we do need a heap of other stuff to keep balance. Health nurse recommended those nutritional drinks they give when you can’t eat to bulk up calories - anyone any experience there? PTherapist said build up slowly - there is so much advise to filter and sift.

There are two schools of thought: refeed lots as soon as possible or build quantities gradually (but only in the beginning!).

We didn't build up slowly, but then my d was never hospitalised. We just insisted everyone around the table eats same portions, to the last mouthful.

If you still want to give smaller servings  make sure they are powerful and loaded with hidden calories. There are a number of threads on the forum on how to pack calories into cooking.

The faster the weight goes up, the sooner you are out of danger. Given that hospitalisations are dicey now, I would try going full force!

we are doing well last few days - only one dinner melt down few days ago. Food is laden with cheese, oil, butter - you name it. Shakes and snacks - I think I may go into a food coma. 

we are due Monday to go to CAMHS assessment 2nd appointment - I don’t know how long they will take, it’s clear to me ED / AN as she was skipping and restricting, spiralling cycle before we took it in hand. She is obsessed with food, talking and thinking about it. we need to be careful to try to avoid conversion with being at home now we’re also cooking and shopping round the clock.

You must be relieved to have such big gaps between meltdowns, yay!  Please mark this week as a goid one. I know you will remain on high alert for a while but it's all worth it 👍.

This obsession with food!  2 years on, it's still on my child's mind 30% of the time. But no longer 100% like it used to be. She used to take out cooking books from the library, some kids watch cooking videos on YouTube (the algorithms accelerate this).

Sorry that you have to bring your daughter along food shopping, because an ED mind goes into a spin there. Slowly at first but 10 min later it gets hard for them to control. My D used to swap caps on milk canisters - so full cream would show on top - and bury it into my shopping trolley. My ED (non-AN) friend could browse NZ supermarkets like a child does a toy shop, we had to almost drag them out.

But if you stick to the shopping list and bee-line through the aisles, you should be fine. 😀

Can you structure your days so you can use plenty of non-food distraction, like school work and games/ movies, while you do the cooking?

And thank you again for the joke, because I was sleepless with worry over developments. Another break-through was a friend whose parents live in a big city in China, who told me last week life is already back to normal there. Gave me so much hope!⁶

My daughter somehow seems more relaxed during this crisis. Anyone else have this? Meal supervision is not a problem as everyone is home. She sits home reading, relaxing and eating what she is supposed to. And is able to sleep late!

Same here, @debra18.  D has stopped asking to join the gym, since they are rapidly closing around us.

All meals served and eaten without a rush, sleeping late. So far, so good!
