NYC is taking the initiative to offer free mental health first aid training to residents.
I took the class a few years ago and it is worthwhile. It is all about how to get help for someone who is experiencing a mental health crisis. There is general information about different types of mental health challenges, how to assess someone for suicidality and how to get them help, and some role playing where the people attending the workshop have the opportunity to practice skills which might be necessary in a crisis situation. Perhaps since it is being given by NY it might also be a good place to get additional information about crisis teams, hospitals, etc, in the area.
