I appreciate that some may be aware, but for those of you at the beginning of this journey I just wanted to make you aware that you may be eligible for Disability Living Allowance (for those under 16) or Personal Independence Payment (over 16 years old).
It is an allowance for a child that needs much more looking after than a child of the same age who does not have a disability.  I have claimed this for my son who has type 1 diabetes - I didn't claim it for my daughter as, naively I didn't think we would doing this for long (3 years later!) and we are out of the woods now. But I had an appointment with my nephew recently (age 24) who also has an eating disorder / depression and he was advised by the citizens advice bureau to try claiming it.  I don't think we appreciate how much impact this has on our lives as we do it because we love our children, but so many of us have had a big financial impact, maybe this could help xx

This is very interesting. It would be good to hear if anyone has been successful. I worked out I spend at least 6 hours a day supervising meals!!
15 year old D. Started to feel low summer 2019. Fall out with friends October 2019. Depressed, self-harming and suicidal from January 2020. Diagnosed with AN July 2020. Slowly coming out of it and feeling hopeful for the future.

I think that is very important to know for all UK parents and especially for those who are single parents and need to give up work during refeeding. Thanks a lot for posting that!

If anyone thinking of applying, seems like good idea to ring the enquiry line ASAP as they date the claim from this point so long as you return pack within 6 weeks. You can apply if you are in or out of work. Condition must have been present for 3 months and expected to last at least 6 months.

Bobs,
Thats just it, the level of support required for our D with AN was far greater than for our son with type 1 as it is a constant 24/7 battle, not just supervising meals and snacks but keeping them safe from themselves too and ferrying them to appointments etc.
Also once you are in receipt of DLA you can access discounts and free entry to a lot of attractions and theme parks & apply for a cinema card which allows you free entry and I think 1/2 price for whoever accompanies you. These things are invaluable when it comes to finding things to do to distract on a bad day as that can be costly. We have never yet used this as my son is at an age where he would be embarrassed.

We've been on the middle level of DLA for nearly a year and a half now. The CAMHS liaison officer told us how to go about applying. It's a lot of paper work, but they will help you. Good luck!

I'm not sure, but I think Canada also has some kind of carer's allowance. xx

And in Germany you could ask for "Pflegezeit" and "Pflegegeld". Not very much money but better than nothing and your job is safe for that time.

Thats fab, I really don’t think that’s it’s something people are made aware of and it’s available, not means tested and helps towards all the extras that go hand in hand with dealing with this

Thanks so much Aggie for your post. I filled in the forms over Christmas and posted in the New Year. We have received notification that our application was successful and payment has already gone into my bank.

Bobs, that is excellent news! I'm so pleased for you.
Make sure to check out entry into attractions as they can be free for the person and a career or at least a reduced price and you can apply for a cinema card too which will also give free entry to lots of cinemas x
