D became obsessed with exercise at age 9 and started eating 'healthy' at age 9.5. Restricting couple of months later. IP for 2 weeks at age 10. Slowly refed for months on Ensures alone, followed by swap over with food at a snails pace. WR after a year at age 11 in March 2017. It's about a an 18 year old girl training for a Muay Thai competition. In a preparation for the competition and to be under the required 64kg limit for her category, she lost weight by 'weight-cutting'. I'm quoting: "The regime included water-loading — in which a person drinks an excessive amount of water before reducing their intake — running in a rubber sweatsuit and taking hot, salty baths." Basically dehydrating themselves to get under the weight limit.
What happened next is just very sad. While running with her boyfriend and sister, she collapsed and was taken to the hospital with a heart rate of 180. She was placed in an induced coma and 4 days later her life support was switched off. The preliminary cause of death was severe dehydration.
She did not have an eating disorder or any other underlying illness. This shows the great danger not taking enough fluids in can have.
My d would only drink one small glass of water a day and was admitted to hospital because of her heart (and the perseverance of a very good GP). She was so dehydrated the nurses could find a vein to put in an IV to hydrate her. She was eventually convinced to drink some water in the Emergency Department. I have to point out that my d never fainted although she admitted feeling dizzy. Please if your children are not drinking enough fluids, keep a close eye on them and take them to ER if they feel dizzy.
