Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses and they are not going away. While some treatments have proven effective for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorders, the efficacy of treatment for anorexia nervosa remains discouraging. A major piece that has been identified as missing from the treatment puzzle is the genetic and brain-basis of the illness.

This webinar will discuss a new treatment that has been developing from neurobiological research with the input of patients and their carers. It is a brain–based interactive treatment for adolescents and adults that involves both patients and their supports. Over the last four years, over 90% of participants in open trials have rated this treatment approach to be highly motivating, helpful, and informative in the management of their traits and symptoms.

Drs. Stephanie Peck and Laura Hill will discuss this new treatment that is appearing to impact and change the lives of those with eating disorders.

Dr. Laura Hill is a specialised eating disorder consultant on providing brain-based approaches to eating disorder treatments. Her 2012 TEDx talk “Eating Disorders from the Inside Out”  was wildly popular, viewed almost half a million times.  She is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The Ohio State University. She is one of the original founders of the Academy for Eating Disorders in 1993 and was Director of The National Eating Disorder Organization, now known as NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association), from 1990 to 1994. In addition she was the founder, President & Chief Executive Office of The Center for Balanced Living from 2000 to 2017. In addition, Dr. Hill is the recipient of the Muskingum University Distinguished Service Award in 2014 and the NEDA 2011 Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disorders Prevention and Awareness. She is also the author of, “A Brain-Based Approach to Eating Disorder Treatment,” (Sept. 2017) an interactive electronic text for treatment providers to integrate the brain bases of eating disorders into their ongoing treatment practices. https://www.brainbasedeatingdisorders.org.

Dr. Stephanie Knatz Peck is an assistant clinical and program director for the Intensive Family Treatment (IFT) Programs at the UCSD Eating Disorders Treatment and Research Center. In addition to directing the adult and adolescent IFT programs, Dr. Peck is also involved in translational clinical treatment research focused on translating neurobiological research into applied clinical treatments for eating disorders. Dr. Peck is responsible for the development, testing, and oversight of novel clinical treatments for both adolescent and adults with eating disorders. She received her doctoral degree from Alliant International University where she specialized in clinical health psychology and completed her pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training at UCSD where she specialized in eating and weight issues across the developmental spectrum. Her other research and clinical expertise includes pediatric obesity, parent management training, and multi-family therapy. In her personal time, she enjoys surfing, yoga, and being outdoors.

I have copied this into the events page too. AussieED do you know if the recorded event will be available for viewing? I have registered but will be at work when this is on and suspect I will not be able to watch it live, work is like that.
