Hi there -
Our doctor is recommending Selah House in Anderson, Indiana for residential for my d. It's kind of a last resort, don't know what else to do type of thing. She's barely hanging on to her weight (stable, not losing, not gaining), but all the ED behaviors are there and strong. The doctor thinks it's more behavioral "there's something else there, it's not fear, it's like defiance". She flat out told me she can't stand my daughter and can only last about 5 minutes with her. I'm torn about this, since i know I've given the world this awful human being, but on the other hand, the mama bear in me took umbrage with that. I've looked into a 5 day program, but she flipped out with that, and she shuts down in groups, so I don't see how this is going to help her. I had dismissed the idea of getting her checked for ASD, but I'm looking into that now. Right now, I feel like the doctor just wants to get rid of her (I feel the same way), but I'm not sure residential is going to help someone who so stubbornly will not be helped.

So, long way of asking, anyone with experience with this place?

I’m so sorry that your child’s doctor indicated that she doesn’t like your daughter! How awful! Or is that she was saying your daughter is difficult to work with? Almost all patients with eating disorders are difficult to work with! That goes with the territory.

As far as your daughters eating disorder being a matter of defiance and not fear, who can really say? Certainly fear can manifest as defiance or anger. We can’t know someone’s motives unless they verbalize them to us, and even then, people may not have enough insight to be able to know their own motives.

I don’t know anything about Selah House apart from what I heard from one person who liked it (years ago) for their adult child. There are folks here who have great files with questions to ask of any program before you start. Hopefully, someone will attach a link for you. You need to know what to ask before you decide on a treatment center.
