Morgan O'Toole, CEO of the US-based Kartini Clinic, got in touch with me to send me this link to the first of a series of videos they are making about males with eating disorders. This particular video, presented by Dr Julie O'Toole, Kartini Clinic founder and Chief Medical Officer, is about how to recognise eating disorders in boys. Here's what they say in the description:

This video shows a 12 year old boy who has struggled with classical anorexia nervosa, including fear of fat, self-denial, increased and compulsive exercise, weight loss and intrusive thoughts of worthlessness and shaming. He is also an excellent student, excels at sports and is personally very tidy. He comes from an intact, highly functional and supportive family and there is a family history of OCD and perfectionism. He is able to talk about 'voices' telling him not to eat and what to drink. There are no symptoms of psychosis or delusions except for the delusional belief that he is fat.

Morgan says: "We hope to produce a series of these shortly; we already have raw footage of a adolescent transgender patient (female to male) we think would be very topical."

Me, too, although the boy on the video is very young (sadly...) I like it that the Kartini Clinic got in touch with me direct to show me this video - they'd found my blog details on someone else's blog.

I am so encouraged that treatment centers are realizing that boys and men get ED too and adjusting programs to work with both. When my daughter was going inpatient to different programs, they never acknowledged boys/men get ED and none were ever admitted to the same program.

Very similar to how my boy presented too. So glad this is being more recognised. I hope no one goes through what we did in our first assessment at Camhs where the clinical psychologist suggested that we shouldn't pressure him to eat and gave that advice to the school.

Aaarrrgghh, Boysmum!!! Been there, got similar advice... And, if it wasn't so horrendously damaging, I would laugh out loud at the advice CAMHS gave us when going away on holiday to France five months into the treatment. We were advised to "take a holiday from the eating disorder, too" and I was made to promise that I wouldn't mention food at all. Gosh, how many times was I told to stop talking about food and to trust him to make his own 'choices' when it came to eating. Basically, to completely back off food. It makes me want to SCREAM!

This is also exactly like our 11yr old son presented. I'm also glad to see that it's now being recognised that young boys and men are susceptible to this cruel vile illness also.

It's one of the reasons I write my blog - to raise awareness of the fact that boys and men DO get eating disorders, just like girls. And also to offer hope to other parents of boys because there's a chance that some of the things that worked for us might work for others. Our experiences might overlap, too.
