I couldn't sleep tonight so I ended up turning on TV. The show " Intervention" was on and it was about a bulimic 18 year old boy.
Long story short here was the message: he chose his ed as a way to " control" his anger. It was his parents fault. It was an " addiction". And he magically got better at treatment at " Rosewood ranch" and " chose" to be " sober". Yes those words were used over and over. I was furious and sickened.
I actually wrote in to " Viceland"- the channel that is airing these shows ( which are a bit older) and begged them to stop showing this show when It involves EDs. I explained current research etc. Probably won't do a damn thing but I had to do something.
Ugh. Now I still can't sleep. That poor mother. __________________ Persistent, consistent vigilance!

Different strokes for different folks. If thinking of it as an addiction enabled him to get well, more power to him. My daughter has had several friends who have recovered using 12 step method when nothing else worked. He got better which is the main point. My daughter stopped eating to control anxiety which then spiraled out of control so I can actually see where that might apply to different people. Just my luck she had the genetic predisposition that threw her into the spiral
The parental part is unfortunate and unfair. On the other hand maybe his parents were able to help him the way we help our kids. Doesn't make it their fault in any way!!!

I disagree. The way this show portrayed EDs did a HUGE disservice to all of us out there in the advocacy world trying to educate people. It only played into every stereotype possible. The " interventionist" guy was HORRIBLE to the parents. Basically told the mother that her son's verbal abuse towards her was deserved ( not attributed to his disease). The kid developed this after overtraining for hours and hours a day to " get in shape" for boot camp and then was beat up in boot camp and bullied by other young men.
And was he " cured"? We are led to believe that 3 MONTHS later all was well because he " chose sobriety" . We all know here how EDs work. Anyone ever known someone who was " all better" in 3 months and never had an ED thought or action ever again? This kid was gonna die. He was sick as hell. I'm happy he had gained weight and had his behaviors interrupted in treatment, but the message of the show made me so sad and disgusted.
I've watched this show before when it was about an alcoholic and a drug user and the family was not blamed as the root cause of the kids use. It was just sad. __________________ Persistent, consistent vigilance!

mamabear, I agree. Recently in Australia in the state of New South Wales (NSW) an official education department directive was issued to all teachers to mandatorily/compulsary report obiesity as a ""Child Protection Issue"" WHAT THE!! Especially given the situation that the Butterfly Foundation is headquarted in NSW what were these government department officials thinking & what page of the best practice evidenced based manual for eating disorders were thery reading? __________________ ED Dad
