Hi - our 15yr old son was diagnosed with Anorexia in September '16. Things have been gradually improving. He is taking fluoxetine (40mg a day)  for depression. He is now far more sociable, eating is stable and just starting to be more independent. His weight is at target but know it still needs to be higher. Last week his blood tests showed high blood  sugar and he has now been diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes. More injections, more focus on food, more keeping check and this time for the rest of his life. Professionals have stressed that there is no connection between the anorexia and the Diabetes. Anyone else have any experience of this?

Oh wow, that is a tough load for you and your son.
I have not come across someone with a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes after AN diagnosis. There have been a few on the forum in the past where glucose control (not using insulin)  is used as a method of purging (diabulimia), so unfortunately one to watch out for.

Great that your son has been doing so well, and is starting to get back to things from his AN. Well done.

Thank you. Just trying to get our heads around it all now. Wondering whether there is a link between the fluoxetine he takes and the diabetes? xx

Hi Spicer, glad you found this forum and that your son is doing better, you're doing a great job getting him to eat and gaining weight, well done! This is a long journey and you probably would need to keep an eye on him for some time to come.

You'll find this link very interesting:https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/05/170512081332.htm
In May this year, research was publish which showed the genetic link between anorexia and metabolic disorders. Here is a short quote:"We identified one genome-wide significant locus for anorexia nervosa on chromosome 12, in a region previously shown to be associated with type 1 diabetes and autoimmune disorders".

It is possible that whatever triggered the anorexia also triggered the diabetics. There is still much research needed.

Best wishes

Dear Spicer, I can't help with your question directly. But in case this is all new to you, be aware that with type 1 diabetes, extra awareness is needed to keep the person safe, because of all the focus on food, and because people can restrict their insulin to 'control' their weight. So I imagine it's something you and your son need to take extra care of. It's been in the news quite a bit in the UK recently. I can dig out links if you like.

Thank you both. It all feels a little overwhelming. Now needing to try and link up all parties so that we have a team approach. Harder than you would think! He's coping relatively well though I am now programmed to be on constant alert and can see trouble ahead. The website is really interesting - I feel certain there must be some link and this would make complete sense. Thank you everyone xxx
